Fresh from Fibres West, WAFTA brings you paper and fibre arts combined in this one off international artist workshop exploring paper thread. Students will use Asian handmade papers to create various lengths and thicknesses of paper yarn using specialist techniques. These papers will be crumpled, dampened, rolled, cut and spun to become thread, which offers options - to be woven, knitted or crocheted into pages; to sew books together; to embroider messages! You will come away with a one-of-a-kind paper yarn and the start of a project that uses this versatile fibre.
PAPER TO TEXTILE
Paper's role in, and as, textile art is often underrated and assumed to be flat and docile. In this class, handmade paper takes centre stage as it is sliced, crumpled, spun and woven in an evolution of the ancient Japanese arts of Jiseung (paper weaving) and Joomchi (paper texturing and fusing). These manipulated pieces can become pages of artist books, fabrics for wearable art, printing substrates, and artwork ready to hang. Everyone will leave with samples and new skills in the possibilities of paper and its prototypes that mimic textiles
AIMEE LEE: Artist USA
Aimee Lee is an internationally recognised artist, papermaker, writer, and the leading Hanji researcher and pratitioner in the USA. Her Fulbright scholarship research in Korea led to her award winning book, Hanji Unfurled, and the first US Hanji studio at Morgan Conservatory. Her artwork is exhibited internationally and collected in numerous libraries that include Brooklyn Museum of Art, MOMA, and Yale University. She has taught and lectured at the American Museum of Natural History, Asian Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and numerous art and design colleges and art schools such as Haystack, Peters Valley and Pentland. www.aimeelee.net

#1 Do I have to be a WAFTA member to attend this workshop?
Yes. All WAFTA workshops are for WAFTA members only unless otherwise stated. If you would like to attend this workshop please complete a membership application and payment - Membership is $50 (conc.$40) per financial year payable by PayPal. Once we have confirmed receipt of your payment you will be eligible to book a place on a WAFTA workshop.
#2 Do you have a waiting list if this workshop is fully booked?
Yes, if the workshop is full up please do register your name on our waiting list through Eventbrite. Should a participant be unable to attend, due to unforseen circumstances, this will enable us to release their ticket to the first available person on the waiting list. An email notification will be sent to you via Eventbrite with instructions on completing your transaction. You will need to have a confirmed WAFTA membership to be eligible.

Please consider your participation in this workshop carefully. We can only offer a refund if it is possible to find another WAFTA member to take your place. The Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA) was founded in 1995 and is a dynamic and progressive group with passion, enthusiasm and talent that reflects the growing interest and appreciation of textile and fibre art within the community.
WAFTA’s members include both established and emerging artists who between them employ a diverse range and combination of fibre and textile processes incorporating combinations of traditional, contemporary and experimental techniques. There is also an increasing crossover of textiles and other mediums, with glass, digital print, digital projection, ceramics, metal and the natural environment – to name but a few.
WAFTA’s objectives include increasing the understanding of the potential of fibre and textiles through exhibition, whilst encouraging the highest standard of design and craftsmanship.
